Presentation of the Plaine des Maures

Bordered to the north and west by limestone foothills, and to the south and east by high hills, the Plaine des Maures is designated as the first nature reserve in the Var département.

A biodiversity hotspot in the Mediterranean region and unique in France, the Plaine des Maures boasts a fascinating and diverse landscape. Like a mosaic, its array of natural habitats — oak forests, maritime and umbrella pine woodlands, maquis scrubland, temporary ponds and streams, grasslands, and sandstone outcrops — provides an ideal environment for the development of endemic species.

Covering over 5,000 hectares, this area is home to approximately 10% of France’s entire floral and faunal heritage. Since its designation as a Nature Reserve in 2009, it has been the focus of a dedicated action and conservation plan.
